Wong Zhi Yi gains a deeper insight into the issue of pet abandonment in Singapore as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty in Singapore’s (SPCA) executive director shares his views.

Thinking of buying or adopting a pet? Well, think again. Caring for a pet is demanding and it is vital for pet owners to instil a responsible mindset towards pet ownership in our community.
Through the interview, Dr Gill mentioned they handle about 40 - 50 cases of animal abuse or abandonment each month. Dr Gill shares his views on harsher punishments “there can still be room for improvement as society evolves and take a stronger stance”.
In the picture shows, Nala an adopted dog who was abandoned by her previous owner due to its’ medical condition. Dr Gill says that “a pet is for life” and you have to ensure you are fully ready and committed before getting one.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, SPCA’s biggest fundraising event had to be cancelled. However, SPCA says that “We are thankful to many people who have supported us as we adapt and find ways to raise funds digitally”.
Dr Gill emphasises “We are fairly certain that the empathy that people have grown over the years, and people have been keen to support animal welfare causes”
